The institute is an independent and self-financed scientific association devoted to the research and teaching of Ophthalmology, to the exchange of ideas and scientific discoveries, to the improvement and diffusion of medical and surgical treatments as well as to the general promotion of Ophtalmology.
The name that distinguishes the institute was adopted in memoriam of José Antonio Barraquer Rovialta, and it has got active members in all five continents.
