THE GIANTS OF CATALONIA
The giants are figures, usually they are queen or moor and a princess. A lot of Catalan cities villages have their own giants. Giants are figures consisting in a puppet of big dimensions made in wood and carton. Their origins are unknown and they are traditional in several European countries.
In Catalonia, the oldest documents about them are from the 14th century in relation of the procession of the feast of Corpus Christi in Barcelona (David, Goliath and St. Christophorus). It their origins they were represented by a man disguised. The giant woman didn’t appear until the 16th century, and probably this was the reason why the giant-men are warriors and the giant-women are ladies dressed at the fashion of that epoch.
